Bard on the Beach founding artistic director Christopher Gaze has just announced the Shakespeare festival's lineup for 2023.

As You Like It, with its blend of Shakespearean comedy and Beatles hits, will open the 2023 festival on the BMO Mainstage. The original Bard on the Beach production, which features two-dozen classic Beatles songs, broke every Bard box office record in 2018. Directed by Daryl Cloran, it will run from June to September.

“Our 34th season is the full package," says Gaze in a news release, "with dynamic productions for theatre lovers of every stripe. There’s a wealth of romance, music, high-spirited comedy, and compelling drama--something just for you, whether you’re a committed Shakespeare fan or have never been to Bard before. And the Beatles are an entry-point for everyone!”

Also running from June to September on the BMO Mainstage is Shakespeare's drama Julius Caesar. The age-old tale, in a modern setting this season, speaks powerfully to the current political landscape, and is directed by Cherissa Richards, who helmed the 2022 season's Harlem Duet.

Over on the Howard Family Stage, running from June to August, is Henry V, directed by Lois Anderson (2018's Lysistrata and 2019's The Taming of the Shrew).

And lastly, running from August to September at the Howard Family Stage, is Goblin: Macbeth, which depicts what happens when three Goblins come across a copy of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare. The play was originally produced by The Shakespeare Company and Hit and Myth Productions in Calgary.
