Cultch postpones vAct's world premiere of Bad Parent until 2022-23 season
A "COVID-19 situation" has interrupted a world premiere in Vancouver's theatre world.
It concerns Vancouver Asian Canadian Theatre's (vAct's) Bad Parent, featuring Josette Jorge and Raugi Yu as parents of a baby, which was scheduled to open tonight (April 21) at the Cultch.
The two-hander, written by Ins Choi and directed by Meg Roe, has been postponed until the 2022-23 season.
"Please know that this decision did not come easily, as the vAct, Prairie Theatre Exchange, Soulpepper Theatre, and Cultch teams have been working tirelessly to bring this beautifully crafted story of love and connection to life so that we can share it with you all," vAct managing artistic director Derek Chan and Cultch executive director Heather Redfern said in a joint statement. "We would like to encourage you to hang on to your tickets and stay tuned for the new show dates. Thank you for all your support.”
The Cultch is encouraging people to hold onto their tickets until the next show dates can be announced.
Alternatively, they can move them to the next show at the Cultch, Catalyst Theatre's The Invisible: Agents of Ungentlemanly Warfare, which runs from April 29 to May 7.
Choi, who also wrote Kim's Convenience, likened opening a play to taking a child to kindergarten for the first time.
"You’re nervous cuz you know it, love it, and birthed it, but will they like it?" he said. "Will they see in it what you see? Love what you love about it? Vancouver was where my journey with this play began and I was super excited to premiere it here with vAct and this stellar team of artists. Making and presenting art is so uncertain in these times. We’ll be back.”
This week, a different play—White Noise—had three performances cancelled due to "unforeseen circumstances", but it's now being shown and will continue its run at the Firehall Arts Centre until May 1.
White Noise is a comedy about race relations, written by Taran Kootenhayoo and directed by Renae Morriseau.
