The Dance Centre has just announced that it will present a screening of a short film by flamenco dancer and choreographer Maria Avila on May 11.

In the five-minute work, IN/COMPLETO, Avila explores the act of creating within the confines of the pandemic.

“Flamenco is typically performed with a group that includes a guitarist, percussionist, singer, and dancer," says Avila in the event info. "Left in isolation from others, what could be possible? This led me to create my own musical score and explore voice. I found myself changing roles of dancer to singer to percussionist, decomposing and reconstructing the elements of flamenco.

"My aim was to encapsulate my current reality of being an artist in the COVID era," adds Avila, who recently completed a MFA in dance at York University. "Choreography was generated through feelings of loneliness, appreciation, anger, boredom and repetition.”

The film, with videography by Clint Mazo, will be shown at 5 pm Pacific time on YouTube a part of the Digital Dance Series.
