The Dance Centre has just announced that it will present the premiere of Virginia Duivenvoorden's Hearts of Cloth online on December 8.

Duivenvoorden performs her own choreography, under the direction of crossmaneuver artistic director Kay Huang Barnes. The two had previously worked together with the Karen Jamieson Dance Company.

"This dance piece follows an artist’s journey from confinement through chaos to calm," reads the event info on the Dance Centre website. "The process takes dance and art that was created at home during the pandemic, inside the (Covid) safe shelter of the studio and theatre."

"I took the seeds of the ideas for a dance piece in July from my home to the Dance Centre as B.C. was reopening," notes Duivenvoorden in her artist statement. "While adapting the choreography for a different space, I revisit my curiosity for using visual arts lenses for dance. The string and suspended objects I use, create optical and physical differences in the dance studio.

"I brought fabric from my projects at home, inspired by installation pieces I had been a part of in Arnhem, Netherlands. Influenced by love for the use of fabrics in many dance forms, I am in awe of the beautiful traditions and stories that breathe life into cloth."

The performance premieres on YouTube at 5 pm Pacific time, and you can find more info here.
