One of Vancouver’s top cultural attractions has a new leader at its helm.

Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden, a 35-year-old nonprofit cultural institution located in Vancouver’s Chinatown, announced today (July 7) that Lorraine Lowe is its new executive director.

Lowe has worked with the garden for three years now and has been the acting interim executive director for the past seven months.

She previously worked in film and television production and has worked in the nonprofit sector over the past eight years.

The Ming Dynasty–style garden at 578 Carrall Street was created as a joint collaboration between community members, the Canadian government, and the People’s Republic of China.

The garden offers many art exhibitions, events, and activities (including tai chi and yoga).

The exhibition Rivers Have Mouths, which launched on June 12, is currently on display and will continue until September 12.

It's the first of two art exhibitions in a yearlong public program entitled Solidarity about well-being and recovery that brings together local Indigenous and Chinese Canadian artists.

It'll be followed by Look Towards the Sun (September 23 to December 23), an arts exchange between Chinese Canadian artist Lam Wong, who immigrated from Hong Kong, and Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun, of Cowichan and Syilx First Nations.

In addition, Dancing on the Edge will present Dreaming of Koi, by Dumb Instrument Dance artistic director Ziyian Kwan and dance artist Rianne Svelnis, at the garden from July 8 to 10 and from July 12 to 15.
