Femme Festival shows Clean/Espejos and Bunny among the big winners at this year's Jessie Awards

      Vancouver theatre productions that explored female solidarity and sexuality each won four Jessie Awards last night (June 27).

      Neworld Theatre's Clean/Espejos, which revolved around a Mexican hotel floor manager's encounter with a Canadian wedding guest, took home the prize for outstanding production of a play in the large budget division.

      Alexandra Lainfiesta won the Jessie for outstanding performance in a leading dramatic role. Her costar in Clean/Espejos, Genevieve Fleming, was also nominated in this category.

      The directors, Daniela Atienca and Chelsea Haberlin, captured the Jessie for outstanding direction and Shizuka Kai won for outstanding set design in the same division for their work on Clean/Espejos.

      Other actors honoured in the large budget division were Farren Timoteo for outstanding performance in a leading comedic role for the Arts Club's Made in Italy and Ron Reed for outstanding performance in a supporting dramatic role for Pacific Theatre's How the World Began.

      The Arts Club's Dolly Parton's Smoky Mountain Christmas Carol won three Jessies: outstanding production of a musical, Parjad Sharifi for outstanding lighting design, and Carmen Alatorre for outstanding costume design.

      Also in the large budget division, Riley Hardwick was honoured for outstanding sound design/original composition for the Firehall Arts Centre's Mary's Wedding.

      Savage Society's White Noise and Little Red Warrior & His Lawyer won the Jessie for significant artistic achievement: outstanding empowering and uplifting of Indigenous artists and narratives.

      Savage Society artistic director Kevin Loring won the Jessie for outstanding original script for Little Red Warrior & His Lawyer, which was coproduced with Victoria's Belfry Theatre.

      The awards are named after actor, director, and arts patron Jessie Richardson.

      Emma Slipp was rewarded at the Jessies for her portrayal of the lead character in Hanna Moscovitch's Bunny, which was directed by Mindy Parfitt.

      In the small budget division, the Search Party's Bunny won four Jessies, including outstanding production of a play, for upending traditional story lines about male-female relationships.

      The Search Party founder Mindy Parfitt won for outstanding direction; Emma Slipp was honoured with the outstanding performance in a leading dramatic or comedic role for playing the sexually curious title character; and Jessica Oostergo won for outstanding costume design.

      Bunny and Clean/Espejos were both part of this year's Femme Festival, which was put on by the Cultch.

      Ruby Slippers Theatre's we the same, written by Sangeeta Wylie, won two Jessies in the small budget division: Sophie Tang for outstanding lighting design and Chimerik 似不像 for significant artistic achievement: outstanding video design.

      Zee Zee Theatre's Men Express Their Feelings also won two Jessies in this division: Kimira Reddy for outstanding set design and Sara Vickruck for outstanding sound design/original composition.

      The winner for outstanding performance in a supporting dramatic or comedic role went to Carly Pokoradi for Monster Theatre's Juliet: A Revenge Comedy.

      In the theatre for young audiences division, Carousel Theatre for Young People's Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls won four of the five Jessies, including outstanding production.

      The other three went to Shizuka Kai (her second Jessie of the night) for outstanding design: set design, Jennica Grienke for outstanding artistic creation: direction, Angelica Schwartz for significant artistic achievement: assistant direction and gender consultation.

      The Jessie Award winner for outstanding performance in the young audience division was Melissa Oei for her performance in Green Thumb Theatre's Like It or Not.
