Although the Jessie Richardson Theatre Awards has had to cancel its physical get-together this year, it's announced plans to go virtual.

"The 2019/20 Jessie Awards theatre season was devastatingly interrupted, but we are committed to celebrating the magic and wonder that was created before that interruption by our incredibly talented community, as well as recognize those shows that sadly could not go ahead," they said in a statement yesterday. "We have begun the work to make this year’s online show entertaining, engaging and a joyous testament to this season’s work and the deserving nominees and award winners. "

The society behind the ceremony has said it will soon announce dates for an online nominations party and awards show.

Last year's awards were held in July at the Bard on the Beach main stage. This would have marked the 38th annual prizes for theatre  in the 2019-20 season. As of mid-March, local stage companies had cancelled the rest of their lineup due to COVID-19 measures banning large gatherings.
