Fourteen Vancouverites are being recognized for their contributions to the city's art and cultural scene by the 2011 Mayor's Arts Awards.
The awards will be presented October 6 at the Caprice Theatre on Granville Street. Recipients in the performing, visual, literary, and culinary arts each select an emerging artist to share the award, and both receive a $2,500 cash prize.
Awards for arts support in volunteerism, business support, philanthropy, and board member of the year will also be presented.
The award recipients in the studio arts categories are:
Craft and design: Industrial designer Robert Studer, with emerging designer Zoe Garred
Culinary arts: Teahouse executive chef Annabelle Leslie, with emerging chef Erik Heck of the Flying Pig
Film and new media: Videomatica co-founder Graham Peat, with emerging media artist Anu Sahota
Literary arts: Author and BC Bookworld publisher Alan Twigg, with emerging writer Glynis Whiting
Visual arts: Photographer Stan Douglas, with emerging multimedia artist Julia Feyrer
Public art: Barbara Cole, with the emerging Norma Artists' Collective
Community arts: Secret Lantern Society's artistic director Naomi Singer, with emerging artist Helene Bolduc
The award recipients in the performing arts categories are:
Dance: Kokoro Dance's Barbara Bourget, with emerging dancer/choreographer Deanna Peters
Music: Composer Jeremy Berkman with emerging composer Iman Habibi (recently profiled in the Straight's Fall Arts preview)
Theatre: Bard on the Beach artistic director Christopher Gaze, with emerging actor and playwright Anton Lipovetsky
