Monsoon Festival of Performing Arts runs August 1 to 31

      The South Asian Arts Society has announced the dates and program schedule for the sixth annual Monsoon Festival of Performing Arts.

      The festival, which runs from August 1 to 31, celebrates South Asian art in the world through dance performance, panel discussions, a marketplace of visual art, dance classes, and development workshops.

      “In 2016 we launched the Monsoon Festival of Performing Arts to provide South Asian artists with a platform on which to showcase their creative work," says festival producer Gurpreet Sian. "This year we’re excited to again present our festival online with a range of remarkable artists performing in some amazing music, dance, informational, and participatory events--as well as a special partnership with the Punjabi Market Regeneration Collective."

      Events include the Monsoon Marketplace (August 1-31), which features the work of visual artists Angela Aujla, Anumation, Guntaj Deep Singh, Jag Nagra, and Kiran Rai; and Monsoon Music Night (August 15), featuring performances by Des Raj, Jaswinder Raj, Rana Dholi, Kunda Culture, Uzume Taiko, and Israel "Toto" Berriel & Friends.

      Monsoon Talks (August 22) are artist panel discussions with Guntaj Deep Singh, Mustaali Raj & Minahil Bukhari, Diamond Point, and Sandeep Johal, with guest curator Jas Lally.

      Sunday Funday Dance Lessons feature free lessons on Bollywood Dance with Karima Essa (August 1), Bhangra with Vancity Dance (August 8), Gidha with NachiYay (August 15), and Song & Dance with Krystal Kiran (August 22).

      And Workshop Wednesdays are free community-based development workshops on Music Review & Release Strategies with Ishq Bector (August 4), The Score: Sound Design & Composition for Theatre & Film with Ruby Singh (August 11), and Freeing Your Character: Script Analysis for Actors with Adele Noronha (August 18).
