Moving quickly into virtual-concert mode, Music on Main is preparing to present a Youtube premiere by Terry and Gyan Riley on Tuesday (April 7) at noon.
The video stream, found here, captures a full concert presented as part of the series' A Month of Tuesdays offerings, on February 17 at Christ Church Cathedral.
Just before that event, and before COVID-19 measures closed all theatre and concert venues in town, Georgia Straight music writer Alexander Varty had a chance to talk to the father-son duo, who combine improvisation and minimalism with jazz, eastern influences, and rock.
In the article, Gyan said he and his composer-performer father enjoy blurring both genre and generational boundaries. "“It’s something that some people have a hard time with, because they don’t know what to call it,” he told the Straight. “They don’t know with what prior experience they should analyze what they’re hearing. And I think the answer is to not analyze it, but to just kind of bathe in it, and react to it however you will.”
Those interested in what that might sound like can click the "Reminder On" button on the left side of their Youtube video to receive a reminder about the April 7 performance.
Music on Main is just one of Vancouver's classical or contemporary music series offering online viewing opportunities during the pandemic; see links to their content plus more in a Straight roundup here.
The new-music series has been ahead of the curve, posting scores of videos on its channel, including concert performances and informative Musical Moment talks with the likes of composer-performer Aaron Graham and composer Laura Bowler.
