Nine BC artists make Playwright Guild of Canada 2023 Tom Hendry Awards shortlist

Today is a big day for BC’s playwrights. Specifically, the nine that just landed on this year’s Tom Hendry Awards shortlist.
The awards recognize new works for the stage in a variety of categories including drama, musical, theatre for young audiences, and more.
Announced by the Playwrights Guild of Canada today, here’s a breakdown of BC’s shortlisted candidates:
- Natalie Meisner was nominated for the Playwright Guild Drama Award for Area 33, and for the Carol Bolt Award category for Legislating Love: The Everett Klippert Story
- Landon Braverman, with Anna Jastrzembski, has been nominated for the Dan School of Drama & Music (Musical) Award for the play Captain Zuke
- Leanna Brodie (in partnership with Francophone playwright David Paquet) has been nominated for the Dorothy Lees-Blakey Theatre for Young Audiences Award with the play The Weight of Ants
- Scott Button was also nominated for the Dorothy Lees-Blakey Theatre for Young Audiences Award with the play For Now
- Dorothy Dittrich has been nominated for the Playwrights Guild Comedy Award for Lesser Demons
- Kico Gonzalez-Risso was also nominated for the Playwrights Guild Comedy Award for Timepiece
- Lili Robinson has been nominated for the John Palmer Award, which highlights playwrights who challenge the mainstream
- Sangeeta Wylie was also nominated for the John Palmer Award
- Marianne Sawchuck, the creator and producer of Women at Plays, was nominated for the Bra d’Or Award, which recognizes efforts towards supporting and promoting the work of Canadian women playwrights
- Donna Spencer, cofounder and artistic producer of Firehall Arts Centre, was also nominated for the Bra d’Or Award
The 2023 Tom Hendry Awards will be held on Sunday, October 29 and will be available for online viewing via YouTube.
