A new group exhibition at the Richmond Art GalleryA Practice in Gestures, will feature beading, embroidery, ceramics, sculpture, and video by six B.C.-based artists.

The all-woman show, which runs from September 10 to November 7, will showcase the work of South Asian Muslim Canadian artist Farheen HaQ, interdisciplinary artist and Emily Carr University professor emeritus Deborah Koenker, Anishinaabe bead artist Bev Koski, Iranian Canadian artist Mitra Mahmoodi, embroidery artist Bettina Matzkuhn, and UBC professor emerita of the Department of Art History, Visual Art and Theory, Barbara Zeigler.

A Practice in Gestures explores methods of resistance and resilience," says Richmond Art Gallery curator Nan Capogna in a press release, "turning to the subtle yet tangible ways in which we emotionally and physically work through personal—and ultimately universal—inquiries.

"At the start of the pandemic we saw a collective turn inward toward the home and to making things by hand," she adds, "more than a year later this exhibition provides perspective on what these kinds of simple practices can offer.”
