Consider it an opportunity to not only look a little more smashing, but to also do some good as you up your fashion game.

On April 26 John Fluevog Shoes in Gastown hosts the return of its St. James Music Academy Fundraiser. From 6pm onwards, 50 percent of every pair of shoes sold will go towards the Downtown Eastside non-profit music school.

An after-school program providing a free classical music education to children in youth, St. James Music Academy was established with the idea of promoting “social change through the power and love of music.”

As for John Fluevog Shoes, they’ve been coveted and worn by everyone from Lady Gaga and Beyoncé to Jack White and Scarlett Johansson. (Check out the Straight's profile of legendary designer John Fluevog here.)

“We know that music education makes a real difference in the lives of children, so this is a great time to bring your friends to check out Fluevogs’ artful, unique collection,” Saint James Music Academy’s executive director Sarah Godoy says of the fundraiser. “Half the price goes to your snazzy new shoes and the other half pays for an amazing music education for kids in the Downtown Eastside.”

In a statement to the Straight she added: “As a charity, Saint James Music Academy relies on the generosity and friendship of others to make high quality music education available to children in this community.  The support of a local business like Fluevogs is a great example of neighbours helping neighbours, citizens helping citizens, and the beautiful things can grow from that.  We are so grateful for this support."

Fluevog, meanwhile, shared with with the Straight: “It’s been our honour and pleasure to support SJMA from its humble beginnings and to watch it flourish and be an anchor in the DTES amidst such hopelessness. We’re big fans of helping kids to reach their full potential.”

Need another reason to get excited, besides knowing you’re doing some serious good in the Downtown Eastside by poneying up for a pair of Joyrides, Pandoras, Cowboy Highs, or Mildreds? Rain or Shine Ice Cream will also be on site, as will performing student musicians from St. James. Which means you’ll have the opportunity to not only look good outwardly, but feel good within.
