3:01 Pick Me Up: The Cramps

Let’s face it: 3 p.m. is the cruellest time of the workday. The morning latte has worn off, and the post-lunch crash has you staggering around like an extra from a George A. Romero flick. That’s why, each weekday at 3:01 p.m., we present you with a video hand-picked to kick-start your heart. If the following clip doesn’t bring you temporarily back to life and help get you through the rest of the afternoon, chances are you’re dead inside.

As we continue our countdown to Halloween, allow us to change seasons for one second. Back in the day, every Christmas, a riotously out-of-it uncle of ours would be dragged out of the old folks home so that he could enjoy a “seasonal holiday” with the family. One morning he walked into the living room while the Cramps “Garbageman” was playing on MuchMusic. He looked at the TV, and then spluttered “That’s the work of the Devil”. He was probably right.

I think said uncle was probably talking about Bryan Gregory's hair.

I like how Bryan Gregory one day packed up all their gear and rode off into the night with it never to be seen again anywhere on this planet. Alien confirmed

Heh. I remember arguing as a teenager with my big-haired, Skinny-Puppy-lovin' Wiccan Goth female friends that this song is about heroin (the "real junk"). They refused to believe me, though the presence of a syringe visible in Lux's hand gave them pause...

The Cramps were amazing to see. I didn't see Brian -- he had exploded in a shower of pus or whatever by that time, they had their bassist "Fur" --- at UBC. Slow opened, I think; I had a vague memory of Tom Anselmi drinking blood. Anyways, such good music. Primative but just right. Lux deep throated the mic and made gurgling sounds with it while writhing in very low-cut spangly pants and his wife/muse Ivy was rock solid on guitar and of course very fly. What a great memory, thanks Georgia Straight.

Lux wrote amazing lyrics. He really wrangled something fresh and unique out of a lot of cliches. Almost as good as Chuck Berry!
