Scary videos of Russian meteorite "explosion" and shockwave

A ten ton meteor "exploded" (according to Russia Times) in the stratosphere above the Russian Urals this morning.

RT is reporting that close to a thousand people sought medical attention when the ensuing shockwave shattered windows in the city of Chelyabinsk. A rain of debris and a lot of panic followed.

Naturally, there's some speculation that it's related to asteroid 2012 DA14, scheduled to scare the living bejesus out of everyone when it flies past the Earth later today at the uncomfortably close range of 27,000 kilometers.

Speaking of scary, check out some of the videos from the event.

Just thought to mention to those who are interested that a recently published book called "Comets and the Horns of Moses" does a great job of explaining the history of comets and asteroids and their interaction with our planet. The book also provides evidence that major impact events are by no means "rare" in human history. It's a 'must read' for those who want to get up to speed on this increasingly important topic. Your life, or the life of a loved one, could depend on it!
