Police announcement on gang murder  Early this afternoon, the B.C. Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit is expected to hold a news conference announcing charges in connection with the 2011 shooting of Jonathan Bacon in Kelowna.

Cops clarify Elisa Lam situation  The Los Angeles Police Department says it is awaiting the results of toxicology tests before it can declare how UBC student Elisa Lam died. Her body was found in a water tank on top of the Cecil Hotel.

Dix offers change for the better  In a speech yesterday to NDP members in Burnaby, Leader Adrian Dix test-drove his party's new slogan for the election: Change for the better—one practical step at a time. But there was a glitch when the NDP livestream didn't work, preventing the speech from going out across the province over the Internet.

Argo wins best picture  Ben Affleck wasn't nominated in the best director category, but his film Argo still captured the best-picture honour. Daniel Day-Lewis and Jennifer Lawrence took home Oscars for best actor and best actress, and Ang Lee won the Academy Award for best director for Life of Pi.

Raul Castro says he'll stay in power  Cuban president Raul Castro, 81, has announced that he'll retire in five years and named Miguel Diaz-Canel as his second-in-command.

Canucks blown out in Detroit  The Red Wings annihilated the Canucks 8-3 yesterday at Joe Louis Arena, thanks in part to three unanswered power-play goals in the second period.
