Posters offer $1,000 reward for evidence of animal testing at UBC

Posters like the one above have begun popping up in Vancouver. They purport to offer a $1,000 reward for photographic evidence of invasive animal experiments going on at UBC.

The source of the posters is not identified on the material. Animal-rights groups, such as Stop UBC Animal Research and the Animal Defence and Anti-Vivisection Society of B.C., have campaigned against the use of animals in scientific research at B.C.'s largest university.

According to statistics released in December 2012 by UBC, 225,043 animals were used in experiments at the university in 2011. That was up from 211,604 in 2010.

In 2011, these animals included rats and mice (138,812), fish (54,971), reptiles and amphibians (23,128), birds (4,719), small mammals (1,047), large mammals (800), and marine mammals (1,566).

I wish there was more specification on what kind of mammals are used. I know cats and primates are definitely involved.

Please. Stop this horror. Stop this torture. Stop this inhumanity now. Respect and value all beings. We are all connected. We are all one.

I don't think it's too much to ask for transparency. They tell the public everything is humane and standard industry practice, but those laboratory doors are locked up like Area 51. What are they hiding?

How many of you protesting against animal research have pets that you've taken to the veterinarian to get vaccinated? How many have children that have been vaccinated? Anyone you know come down with Typhoid, Anthrax, Diphtheria, or the measles? Have any of you had the need for an MRI or CT scan to help diagnose an injury or illness or know someone who has?

The doors to the facilities are locked up like Area 51 because there are those out there that are willing to break in and cause a lot of destruction in the name of their cause. Most places I've worked are willing to give people tours if you ask, we just want to prevent those that like to take tours at night, with masks, and axes.

Dave, the people who are horrified and incredulous that animal research is still consuming so many lives and so much precious funding are doctors, lawyers, engineers, laborers, sales clerks, IT guys, artists, musicians & many enlightened scientists - it is a disservice to the public to dismiss their concerns for so-called security reasons. Please be honest: the primate research labs are off-limits, for one, because if the public saw their stark reality, your Psychology Department and Brain Research Centre would be officially closed down tomorrow.
A further cruelty is that human patients in need must wait in line for their turn at just those technological marvels you mention, in part due to the fact that the same machines are being diverted for animal research use....

I work in the industry... I have never seen anything horrific like that picture above. We a very clean and sanitize everything. Have you ever needed to take pain medication? Advil? well for you to consume it the Canadian government regulates that it must be first used on animals to deem it safe. All of these posters will do nothing because It is the government that wants this done. I think people have a unrealistic view of what happens behind the walls at a facility. Don’t believe everything you read or see on the internet, it makes you ignorant. If you really hate testing so bad then stop helping your child when they have a ear ache or a fever and do it the ol' natural way.

Posters will at minimum generate a discussion. If that is all they do then we're better off for not being silent. You're absolutely correct that the government wants it done ... I reckon in order to change government legislation we'll have to get a lot of people on board first. Hence, the poster.

It's someone uncanny to know that you can work in the industry and never see anything like what is pictured above. Not all of the atrocities are as blatant as the picture in the poster ... but conditioned ethical blindness starts somewhere. I'm sure we've all done it, looked away. I have. As for the people that really hate testing so bad, there are measures that many of us take to stop the continued, repeated testing and unnessesary testing. There are ways to raise awareness and live accordingly.
