Michelle Shocked apologizes on Piers Morgan Live

In case you still care, Michelle Shocked has gone national with an apology to the gay community and her fans on the CNN news program Piers Morgan Live, in response to her perceived homophobic comments at a concert in San Francisco on March 17.

As usual, she talked in hard to follow doublespeak and repeatedly avoided answering Morgan's direct question: "Are you homophobic?" Shocked also pointed out that the performance in question was supposed to have been live, not recorded, which to her is "…an important difference but I don't think we have time to go into it right now."

In an attempt to prove that she just simply didn't know what she was talking about when she said "Once Prop 8 gets instated and once preachers are held at gunpoint and forced to marry the homosexuals, I'm pretty sure that will be the signal for Jesus to come on back…", Shocked then attempted to reference point-by-point a transcript of the concert which she had created, before Morgan interrupted her in the name of keeping it simple for the audience.

She did eventually cough up an apology, but then kept trying to prolong the interview by desperately insisting that Morgan personally confirm her sincerity, then finished off by quoting one of her own songs, before he interrupted her, again.

Remember how, for about one day, the Michelle Shocked story was pretty much the most interesting thing on the internet? Didn't last very long, eh? Her apologies and explanations have only made things worse - from the initial piquant "what the fuck is she thinking" reaction, and the impulse of some to try to give her the benefit of a doubt, she's manage to earn total public indifference and future obscurity, perma-filing herself in the "creepy religious wingnut" drawer, where she'll only have fellow wingnuts to keep her company. Sad, because doubtlessly she's got some good in her too... but who cares now?
