Collingwood Cinema, we hardly knew ye.
Yes, it's more sad news for Vancouver's movie exhibition scene.
The independent south Kingsway venue, formerly the Raja, was taken over by Naz and Mike Jamshedian in November, 2012. The Jamshedians were the former owners of the West End's last movie house Denman Cinemas, which closed on September 30.
The new Collingwood Cinema showed a selection of both Hollywood and, like the former Raja, Bollywood films.
News of the cinema's closure came via the DOXA Documentary Film Festival, who were informed the theatre would close by April 30. The festival had two screenings planned at the theatre. The May 7 screening of Occupy the Movie and the May 9 screening of The Great Hip-Hop Hoax will both be relocated to Vancity Theatre. (Calls to the Jamshedians from the Straight have not yet been returned.)
Collingwood Cinemas joins a raft of movie theatre closures, including the Ridge and Oakridge. Festival Cinemas, which runs the Fifth Avenue Cinemas and the Park Theatre, was taken over by Cineplex in March.
