Ballet B.C. finally opens the balcony again for Giselle

Wow, dance fans: the balcony has opened again.

A quick perusal of tickets on sale for Ballet B.C.'s ambitious new rendition of Giselle shows the company has finally made the upper seats of the Queen Elizabeth Theatre open to viewers again—at least for the Saturday night (April 27) performance.

That's a bigger deal than it might seem: the company, after a serious financial setback in 2008, hasn't opened up the balcony to audiences for several years now. There was even discussion at some points about whether the contemporary ballet should stay in the large hall, which seats a whopping 2,765.

It looks like demand is high for choreographer Jose Navas's contemporary rendition of the age-old ballet. There don't look to be a huge number of seats available for Thursday or Friday night shows either.

The show, balcony opening and all, is a huge turning point for the company: a big investment in a bold commission that brings edgy movement and animated graphics (see the trailer shown here) to the quintessential French Romantic ballet.
