3:01 Pick Me Up: Pastor & Mrs. Jim Colerick

    1 of 3 2 of 3

Let’s face it: 3 p.m. is the cruelest time of the workday. The morning latte has worn off, and the post-lunch crash has you staggering around like an extra from a George A. Romero flick. That’s why, each weekday at 3:01 p.m., we present you with a video hand-picked to kick-start your heart.

You know how sometimes satire is executed so cannily that it's hard to tell whether or not it actually is satire? Today's offering is a prime example. "Rappin' for Jesus" is either a parody of painfully square church elders trying to speak to young people in their own language, or it's the genuine article. The person who uploaded it to YouTube, Brian Spinney, claims "I  helped my pastor make this music video when I was in high school." It didn't take much detective work to discover that the domain for the website of the church where Jim Colerick was allegedly the pastor, West Dubuque 2nd Church of Christ, was registered in January of this year. The site, however, says the church shut down in 2004. Draw your own conclusions.

Oh, and just a warning for you sensitive types: as with all good satire, the following may offend you. There is some politically incorrect language in it, as befits, well, painfully square church elders trying to speak to young people in their own language and failing miserably.

Bonus time! The now-classic "Jesus Is My Friend", despite appearances to the contrary, is not satire. In fact, after the video went viral, SonSeed's song was featured on an episode of Glee. It's not a joke! Or maybe it is actually just a small part of a much larger cosmic joke, but who's countin'?
