A lesbian love story featuring graphic sex scenes (with one even running 10 minutes long) has taken top honours at the 2013 Cannes Film festival.

French director Abdellatif Kechiche's La Vie d'Adèle—Chaiptre 1 & 2 (Blue is the Warmest Colour), about a 15-year-old girl who falls for a girl with blue hair, was chosen from a selection of 20 films to win the coveted Palme D'Or on May 26.

American filmmaker Stephen Spielberg, who headed the jury, said that the award would be shared by Kechiche and the two lead actors, Adele Exarchopoulos and Léa Seydoux (Mission: Impossible—Ghost Protocol), who he said were integral to the success of the film.

The win arrives amidst prominent protests against the approval of same-sex marriage in France. French parliament approved same-sex marriage on April 23.
