Kickstarter plans to “open up” crowdfunding site to projects in Canada
The crowdfunding website Kickstarter says it “will open up to Canada-based projects later this summer.”
The U.S. company made the announcement today (June 27) on its Twitter account, but provided few other details.
Launched in 2009, Kickstarter is a popular online-fundraising tool for people behind creative projects in technology, music, games, and other fields.
Financial pledges are solicited for individual projects, which then receive the funding if they reach their dollar-amount goal by a set deadline.
Guidelines listed on the Kickstarter website indicate projects can be launched by “US and UK creators over the age of 18.” Rules for those in Canada are not mentioned.
However, projects in Canada can fundraise using the website if their creators meet requirements such as having a U.S. bank account.
The Kickstarter website lists projects from across Canada that are currently seeking funding or have been successfully funded.
On its Kickstarter in Canada page, the company is asking people to submit their email address if they are interested in launching a project and want updates.

This is great news! I was just looking them up, as I have some projects snowballing and I need some capital to make things happen properly. I'll be keeping on eye on when they go live!
additional funding rounds

I wonder what happens to investor rights when innovators require additional rounds of funding? What sort of protections are in place and is it anything like traditional funding sources?

Kickstarter projects are not investments. They're a very good form of arts patronage. Creators keep their rights, and are able to finance projects. Meanwhile, Kickstarter supporters are able to contribute to art, films, albums, etc. they want to see made.
