Little Free Library opens up near Broadway and Commercial

You may have heard about tiny pop-up libraries being created around Metro Vancouver.

There's one listed at 550 East 26th Avenue, another at 1701 East 4th Avenue, one in Coquitlam (3360 Millard Avenue), and one in Surrey (6271 C 142nd Street).

The idea started in the States, which has gone international.

The libraries look like oversized birdhouses with book shelves inside. Some have been made from old bookshelves or even TV stands.

The latest friendly neighbourhood little free library in the Lower Mainland—Little Free Library #6034—was launched on July 11 and is located at 2305 McLean Drive, near Broadway and Commercial. And what a cute one it is!

It was made with the help of grants from the Vancouver Foundation Neighbourhood Small Grants program and LintBucket Media. (Kate and Rose are the librarians.)

Library users can either donate or borrow books, and the libraries both depend upon and cultivate neighbourhood relationships.

The project flies in the face of bookstores closing and a shift towards digital platforms for books.

If you're interested in starting up your own little free library, or want to learn more about or support the project, visit the Little Free Library website.

While not an official "little free library", there's a neighbourhood book exchange at UBC. http://ubcnoox.tumblr.com/

There are three coming soon in Kitsilano. My guess is that there are at least 10 in the City of Vancouver already. A friend and I drove around to look at the variety.

In case anyone goes hunting for these, there are two in the Drive area that I know of, but I don't think the one on 4th exists (despite it being on the map) there's one on the Lakewood bike route somewhere around Kitchener (?) and one on Salsbury around Grant (?) - not 100% sure on those cross streets.

Any idea when the ones in Kits are opening? I have a ton of great books I'm looking to give a new home to.
