Photos: Vancouver loves its new rainbow crosswalks

Late Sunday night (July 28), City of Vancouver staff quietly laid a fresh and colourful coat of paint over crosswalks at the intersection of Davie and Bute.

The installation comes just as Pride week kicks off, but will remain in place as a permanent ficture of the West End.

Vision Vancouver councillor Tim Stevenson gave the rainbow street art an official unveiling Monday morning (July 29). Shortly after, Vancouver’s social media scene burst with more colour than a pot of gold.

Here’s a selection of our favourite pics from the community.

It's coloured paint, people. Big whoop. And, apparently, a nice venue for photo ops featuring city and provincial politicians.
Meanwhile, the day before, city council voted to spend $6 million on the "first phase" of the 1-km Pt Grey Rd closure/bike route (what's the whole thing going to cost??), opposed by a strong majority of citizens.
Yes, the rainbow crosswalk is very nice. But can we have less grandstanding and more democracy, please?

"Vancouver loves its new rainbow crosswalks". Are you asking us or telling us? Everyone I have spoken to so far says they are tacky and badly executed. Don't patronize us, please. We're perfectly capable of telling politicians what we'd like, if we could just teach them to listen.

Personally, I think this looks awesome! I love what it stands for, but I also love the happy vibe it creates (in my opinion). Similar to the way that I think sidewalk gardens, corner community gardens, yarn-bombed sidewalk trees, etc give off a happy, community-orientated vibe. Totally stoked about this.

I like the look of the rainbow. Rainbows speak of promises! They are also very bright and perhaps motorists will be able to see them more clearly and people can cross safely. We should do all our crosswalks like this. You can't miss them.

My husband & I stayed nearby Davie Street when in Vancouver Sept 2014, and we loved the atmosphere of the area. The variey of restaurants, and the fabulous rainbow crossings....keep them, they are fabulous.
Loved Canada, and found everyone very polite and helpful, you are all good ambassadors for your beautiful Country, thank you! Regards Liz
