Kiss-in protest to be held at Russian Consulate in Vancouver

    1 of 1 2 of 1

If you're outraged at the Russian government's homophobic laws (which have even prompted Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson to speak out about them) and want to do something about it in addition to not drinking Russian vodka, you can participate in a protest that's as simple as a kiss.

Whether you're gay, bisexual, or straight, if you're willing to kiss someone of the same sex in public, you can participate in the Kiss-In Protest being held at the Russian Consulate (475 Howe Street) in Vancouver on Friday (August 2) from 4 to 5 p.m.

This event will lead up to the main event on October 11, to be held on National Coming Out Day.

A nice gesture, but not one that will prompt change. I think Canada (as well as other progressive nations) should boycott the Sochi Games. Hate speech and repression of a certain minority group of people should not be tolerated. I'd like to think the world has learned something in the decades since the 1936 Berlin games.

Protest, be it real or virtual, puts pressure in the powers that be. So whether it is dumping Russian vodka, kissing or staging a march, it shows the world that some are prepared to act and for every one person out demonstrating there are at least a thousand in the population that feel the same.

Do not condemn the actions of others who are working to make a difference.
Every single person has power, and how they choose to excercise that power is a choice. If it were not for "small" actions of a few this would not even be in the media.
Ask The Florida Orange Juice Industry if a boycott works. Better yet, ask Anita Bryant. (Who? Exactly)
I encourage every single person to do what they feel will make a difference. Because it will.
To those who say nothing will make a difference, I say #NYET.

I sent an email to the Russian Consulate in Vancouver. Didn't receive a response of course, but no doubt they got the message.
