Anyone who's travelled recently from the Lonsdale Quay area to the Park and Tilford Mall has probably noticed a massive street-construction project along the way.

Well today, it's been officially completed.

The $101.6-million Low Level Road Project realigned 2.6 kilometres between St. Georges Avenue and 3rd Street East, eliminating three rail crossings at-grade.

It also ensured cargo can move along grade-separated tracks to Neptune and Cargill terminals.

Most importantly for pedestrians, the Low Level Road Project has cleared the way to complete the Spirit Trail walkway from St. Georges Avenue to Kennard Avenue.

Funding came from the following sources:

      • Government of Canada: $49.4 million

      • Port Metro Vancouver: $31.6 million

      • CN Rail: $10 million

      • TransLink: $5 million

      • CP Rail: $4.8 million

      • City of North Vancouver: $800,000

Hallelujah! Now they just have to find a route from Esplanade and Forbes across to Bewicke. That's one of the most dangerous sections of road for cyclists in the Lower Mainland.
