Kelly Clarkson is playing a free show in Vancouver later this year. Sort of. There are a few hoops to jump through.

The American Idol pop superstar is scheduled to sing in commemoration of a Microsoft store opening at Metropolis at Metrotown on Friday, November 8.

Microsoft broke the news via one of its Facebook pages.

“Are you ready to rock, Vancouver?” a post there reads. “Kelly Clarkson will be performing a free concert to celebrate our new retail store opening in November!”

The announcement bills the event as a three-day extravaganza.

Beginning at 10 p.m. on Wednesday, November 6, fans are encouraged to “start lining up” for a chance to touch Clarkson’s hand at an exclusive meet and greet.

At 10:30 a.m. the following morning, “grand opening ceremonies” at Metrotown will officially begin. That’s when and where free tickets for the show will be distributed.

According to the event’s FAQ, the first 100 people in line will receive “two premier viewing tickets” plus one ticket for the meet and greet. Each of the next 2,000 people cued for the store opening will get a pair of tickets for the concert.

“Camping” inside the mall will be allowed the night of November 6.

Finally, on Friday, November 8, at 7 p.m., Clarkson will perform at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby.

And she can really sing, and she doesn't have any scandals that I can think of.

A line can possibly be drawn to that of, say, Miley Cyrus, who is making herself the New Sex Thing. (Gaga is old hat.)

But then, there are the rewards of having a quality product of lasting popularity, where in the words of Joni Mitchell, the record sells more like a novel - presumably alluding to a long tail.

Moreover, I don't know if Clarkson has had such great records that she deserves more cultural impact. But then, I thought that Ben Affleck was Done and here he is with his Oscar and being the new freaking Batman.

Kind of sad that this will be her first performance in these parts. Can't we get a real concert instead of this weird corporate event? How many Top-40 hits do you have to have before you warrant a show at Rogers Arena?

Kelly played the QUEEN ELIZABETH THEATER on May 29 2005 during the Breakaway tour.

She played Kelowna and Victoria in November 2009. She's also played near Seattle on 4-5 tours.

It's a LONG overdue return to Vancouver.
