Ryan Reynolds thanks Vancouver for Deadpool shoot—but not everyone's happy

If your commute to work in Vancouver is longer than usual, don't forget you can always blame it on Deadpool.

The Wolverine spinoff about the Marvel Comics anti-hero, starring Vancouver's Ryan Reynolds as the Merc with a Mouth, began shooting on the Georgia Viaduct on April 4 and will continue to shut it down periodically over the next two weeks.

Closures continue until April 18 and include:

      • To April 16: Georgia Viaduct closed from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays. After the road reopens at 3 p.m., there will remain a 100-metre section of the viaduct that will be limited to one lane.
      • April 11: Georgia Viaduct closed from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m.
      • April 12, 17, and 18: the production has the option to use the viaduct on these days for contingency purposes

The Dunsmuir Viaduct won't be closed.

Alternate routes eastbound out of downtown include the Cambie Bridge or Hastings Street.

And the hometown boy thanked everyone for their patience.

The production will spend $37.5 million in Vancouver and hire more than 1,100 people, according to the City of Vancouver.

But, this being Vancouver, not everyone's excited that the shoot is taking place.

In addition to drivers who are unhappy about disrupted routes, some nearby residents complained (in a CTV News report) about filming continuing into the night and giant spotlights illuminating their apartments until 3 a.m.

Meanwhile, here's a video that captures some scenes from the film shoot with some familiar local scenery in the background:

These complaints will be muffled a year from now when Disney/Marvel makes $500 Million off the movie. Suck it up, princesses.

Why would complainers stop because Disney made a ton o' bucks?

My only complaint is that we seem to be spending much of our lives in a perpetual adolescence and the popularity of comic book characters just proves it. The problems in this world are not going to be solved by overaged children wearing superhero t-shirts. Time to grow up kiddies.

"This being Vancouver", people will whine incessantly. One of the most beautiful cities in the world with the whiniest population by far!

You are SO right! Comic book characters are useless! What good do they do! Little Orphan Annie didn't solve the Great Depression. Superman couldn't stop World War II. And why isn't Aquaman cleaning up our polluted oceans! I could go on and on! Here I was thinking about traffic disruption when the real problem is the overpopularity of comic book characters! Bravo to you and your mature, grown-up, real-world powers of analysis for zeroing in on the one truly important issue in this whole matter of closing the Georgia Viaduct. You must have x-ray vision!

      @Time to Grow Up,

Thank you! I'm glad you agree with me on this. Today's problems need grown up solutions and perpetual adolescents, who are more concerned with video games, aren't going to be the ones to do it. While losing oneself in fantasy is okay occasionally, it's not going to help deal with reality.
