East Van Garbage Watch: Dude Chilling Park? More like Dog Pooping Park

    1 of 9 2 of 9

      East Vancouver smells like shit.

Between West Coast Reduction's rendering plant on North Commercial, the vomit and urine streaking the sidewalks and alleyways after special events, and the epic piles of garbage, it's hard to argue that the east side of town smells like anything other than rancid death.

To wit, I present East Van Garbage Watch (patent pending): a semi-regular series of photos of disgustingness.

Today's entry: Dude Chilling Park? More like Dog Pooping Park.

Now, I visited this repository of gross before back in August 2013. But it seems the situation has not improved much since I first noticed it almost two years ago.

From afar, the can doesn't look so terrible.

      But up close...

      Ewwwwwww.

There are so many bags of dog shit that you can barely find the lid of the trash can.

      Some people don't even try.

There is another lonely garbage can in Dude Chilling Park at the other end of this highly trafficked dog-walking lane.

But it's getting pretty full too.

May I make a wild suggestion? Dude Chilling Park probably needs more than two garbage cans—and they need to be emptied daily.

That being said, Vancouver's 3-1-1 service is great. See a garbage problem? Let the city know! 3-1-1 is open daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Every time I've called in a sanitation issue, it's been dealt with the very same day.

Thanks to Carter Bryant for the tip!

The can around 8:30 a.m. today.

I guess it is good they are actually picking the poop up, but it is still gross.

FYI - West Coast Reduction has recycled the equivalent of 1000 BC Place stadiums full of waste in the past 50 years.

Can't wait to see how people behave with the new food scrap recycling program.

The smells which many people think is just the rendering plant is also a crematorium across from Value Village. Just sayin'.

Oh, I do not deny the reduction plant does good—it does! It just also smells soooooooooooo bad!

      Bad by Vancouver standards

Try living in Montreal right about now - the spring thaw of 5 months of frozen-in-time shit is truly an eye opener.

I used to live in the area - not uncommon for people to step out of their building, have the dog run across 8th, make a mess, and then run back into the building. I do miss the day-drunks though - I don't think any other park has that much coverage in inebriation
