Squamish and Pemberton music festivals do the right thing and ban selfie sticks

B.C.’s summer festival season is almost upon us. Thus, a public service announcement on the subject of the selfie stick.

One of the very few things more annoying than having to watch a concert through a sea of smartphone screens is having to watch a concert through a sea of smartphone screens held high on selfie sticks.

Like PCP and vegemite, this ultimate accessory of the narcissist is simply something we wish society could somehow collectively uninvent.

And yet the selfie stick’s popularity has inexplicably exploded since this time last year.

Concerned about how this latest scourge of the millennial might affect our view of Drizzy, the Straight called up the good folks at Live Nation and Huka Entertainment—who host the Squamish Valley Music Festival (August 7 to 9) and the Pemberton Music Festival (July 16 to 19), respectively—to ask if it were possible to place this item on the events’ lists of forbidden paraphernalia.

“NO selfie sticks,” was the text message I received back from Huka.

Live Nation returned the same. Selfie sticks are banned from the Squamish music festival.

If you were hoping to shove your iPhone over security and into the face of Marcus Mumford, consider your plans foiled and consider us relieved.

They just banned Selfie Stick Pro to secure safeness inside the venue. :)

Biggest "self improvement" thing that people can do is leave the stick at home.
