More than 3,900 people are reported dead after a 7.8-magnitude earthquake devastated Nepal on the weekend. At least 7,000 people are injured.

In Canada and around the world, relief organizations are scrambling to get help to the country. Some of these groups are accepting small donations via text message.

Canadians can use the following methods to support these organizations bringing aid to Nepal:

      • Text "REDCROSS" to 30333 to donate $5 or to 45678 to donate $10 to the Canadian Red Cross Society.
      • Text "NEPAL" to 45678 to donate $10 to UNICEF Canada.
      • Text "RELIEFNEPAL" to 45678 to donate $10 to the UN World Food Programme.
      • Text "MSF" to 41010 to donate $5 to Doctors Without Borders Canada.

Your wireless carrier's text-messaging rates may apply. These groups are all taking donations via their websites too.

An article on the United Nations Population Fund website notes that an estimated 50,000 pregnant women and girls may be among the earthquake survivors.

“In times of upheaval or natural disasters, pregnancy-related deaths and gender-based violence soar,” Priya Marwah, UNFPA’s humanitarian response coordinator in Asia and the Pacific, said in the article. “Many women lose access to essential reproductive health services and give birth in appalling conditions without access to safe delivery services and lifesaving care.”
