Parents, don't let the B.C. Early Childhood Tax Benefit trick you

This is insulting. The provincial government’s B.C. Early Childhood Tax Benefit, introduced this year, is starting to be sent out.

As the enclosed info slip states, the maximum amount for each child under six is $55 per month. With the average full-time rate for a toddler in licensed group care in Vancouver being $1,302 in 2014, one day of care would cost $65—meaning this benefit will not cover even a single day of daycare. (The average full-time rate for a toddler in licensed family child care in Vancouver in 2013 was $1,063 per month, or $53—yay, one day would be covered!)

Advocates in this province have been calling for a rate of $10 a day, and the federal NDP has included $15-a-day daycare in its platform

The provincial government’s true intentions about families and education are belied by its actions. Once you do the math, you won’t fall for their marketing.

You're right. $55/month is useless. Much better to cancel this dumb benefit and put the money to much better use elsewhere.

This only benefits the rich. If you are making 80K and can afford to keep one spouse at home to take care of your kids. Here is $6000/year. But if you both work and make under 80k/ year together here's a measly $600/ year as you pay over a $1000/month to send your kid to day care. You single parents don't even look at us cause you were the officially screwed ones that decided to have kids without a spouse. Yup you get screwed by this tax credit! Way to divy up the money where it's needed Harper!

      childcare is expensive.

unfortunately too many people don't do the math before having children. if you cant afford it, don't do it.

If childcare is expensive, then don't have kids (seriously?)

Unfortunately, too many societies don't do the math before scrapping all and any social programs. If we can't afford public services and institutions that cater to the basic needs of children and families, then let us just continue on the current path, impoverish further working class families, and wait for the bright free market future that awaits us all from it.

      LMAO

What a shock! The solution is more taxpayer handouts and subsidies! Who'd have thought that would be the case? Society does not owe parents daycare before they reach public school and if you can't afford to cover the little darling for 5 years then wait to have kids, save money or make sacrifices like everyone else does.
