Gaspar Noé tries to out-porno Lars von Trier

Sometimes it’s like Gaspar Noé is in a race with Lars von Trier.

From Breaking the Waves to Irreversible, Antichrist to Enter the Void, the two filmmakers compete for shocks by habitually kicking the shit out of their leading ladies and taking an infantile glee in explicit sex.

And fair enough. Ingmar Bergman benefited hugely from the North American taste for pubes draped in respectability. If Bergman had been less of a drag and more like a promiscuously talented male adolescent with violent mommy issues and a porn addiction, maybe he’d still have a career.

If von Trier’s international arthouse superporno Nymphomaniac turned out to be a dud in the end, at least it got Noé’s competitive juices flowing—as it were. The filmmaker has said, “I hope guys will have erections and girls will get wet," and based on this he’s not just flirting with you.
