You can still do yoga today—just not in the middle of the Burrard Bridge

The recent flap over the Burrard Bridge yogathon distracted attention from other events celebrating UN International Yoga Day.

Today, there are free yoga events taking place in several B.C. locations, including Nanaimo, Squamish, and Victoria, as well as the Lower Mainland.

The Indian consulate has worked with several groups to make this happen.

So if you want to participate, here's where you can go in Metro Vancouver:

      • Plaza of Nations in Vancouver from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

      • Guildford Recreation Centre in Surrey from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

      • Vishva Hindu Parishad Temple (3885 Albert Street) in Burnaby from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

One of the participants at the Plaza of Nations will be Vancouver yoga instructor Sandra Sammartino.

She's been teaching students this ancient practice for four decades, focusing not only on its physical benefits, but also on how yoga can clear emotional blockages.

Or you could do it on the sidewalks of streets blocked off for car-free day. But then you'd be getting in the way of cyclists who always seem to find their most convenient route.
