Liv Grewal out as Conservative candidate in Mission-Matsqui-Fraser Canyon

The Grewal family seems to have lost favour with the federal Conservative party.

Liv Grewal, who was nominated by the party to run in the new B.C. riding of Mission-Matsqui-Fraser Canyon, sent out a news release today (July 22) saying that he will no longer be its candidate in this year’s election.

The son of Nina Grewal, who is the Conservative MP for Fleetwood-Port Kells in Surrey, indicated that this was the “result of an unfair political process”.

“I’m disappointed with this decision by the Party,” the young Grewal said.

His father Gurmant is a former Conservative MP, and had planned a comeback in the new riding of Cloverdale-Langley City. However, he wasn’t allowed by the party to join that nomination contest.

Here’s the news release issued by Liv Grewal:

Grewal Withdraws as the Conservative Candidate in Mission-Matsqui-Fraser Canyon

Abbotsford, B.C. – Liv Grewal will not be a Conservative Party candidate in the next federal election in the new constituency of Mission-Matsqui-Fraser Canyon (MMFC). Grewal won the nomination in the first ballot garnering 54% of the votes against four other candidates on May 2nd, 2015. Mr. Grewal graduated in Political Science with Honours from Simon Fraser University and holds a Masters in Public Management and Governance with Merit from the London School of Economics. Grewal has interned in the Office of the Prime Minister of Canada in the Department of Strategic Communication. Mr. Grewal has contributed as a volunteer in seven federal election campaigns and three leadership races. Many Conservative MPs have endorsed Grewal’s candidacy, calling him an intelligent, articulate, and passionate individual who has the potential to be a strong leader.

Grewal had submitted a fair majority of the total 3900 memberships. Grewal said that he, his volunteer team and his family including his 80 year old grandmother had worked hard day in and day out for many months knocking doors to convince residents to become members of the Conservative Party. 100% of all membership forms were submitted by personal cheques or credit cards and all forms were duly signed by the members agreeing to the terms and conditions of the membership. The Party had done its due diligence by calling the membership prior to the vote. An experienced Returning Officer then conducted the nomination vote, as per the Party’s rules and the result was duly announced.

“For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been passionate about public service. Over the last 18 years, I have been actively participating in the Reform Party of Canada, Canadian Alliance, and then to the Conservative Party of Canada. I’m disappointed with this decision by the Party. Sadly, it is the result of an unfair political process.”

A clear case of Liv by the sword, die by the sword. Enough to make a Grewal grumpy.

Three members of an immediate family as M.P.s in three different ridings? I wonder if this phenomenon happens elsewhere in Canada.

The new riding of Mission Matsqui Fraser Canyon was a mistake from the beginning separating communities like Hope Agassiz Harrison Chilliwack now moved Harrison Agassiz to be in a riding of Mission North Abbotsford, Fraser Canyon communities is just wrong and was open to error right from the get go.

The sad part of this story is what is not told about the unethical, undemocratic practices that have happen in multiple party nomination races time and again in this riding and many others. If not for people that stood up to the party brass for accountability over the lack of what they thought was a fair race for all candidates, the nomination race practices in this party would likely never have been exposed and challenged. The shame is when any party members and the party brass allow for cover ups, or undemocratic, unethical double standards for some candidates.
I heard about the questionable practices right after the Conservative nomination race, just as I heard from many people about questionable practices at last year’s Liberal nomination race in our same riding. Unfortunately they are getting better at covering up as I was told that a lot of the signups were only listed about a day before the nomination election and that the list was taken off the net next day. Also that it would cost money to contest and investigate.
I also experienced many questionable practices first hand when I ran as an NDP candidate provincially and think that some of the same multi party opportunists were manipulating things. In the provincial race I had heard after some investigating that the same recruiter that signed up members for the Liberals also signed people up for the NDP, (nothing like hedging your bets!) As I acquired a Liberal list to compare with the NDP list I found that 121 people were on both lists. I also heard from an office worker that there were massive 1 dollar memberships.
The real revelation started when I went door knocking just before the provincial NDP nomination to a few people that I hadn’t signed up that there were people that
      1. Didn’t know that they were members,
      2. Seemed confused when I asked for a member at the address that was on the list,
      3. Didn’t have a clue about any of the party policies or ideology,

Because of what I found out door knocking I asked the Party office rep if they could bring the membership forms or computer file (if they had one) to cross check signatures on forms with ID to look for signature fraud. That never happened and I found out both at the nomination election and after when I acquire a Liberal list to cross check with, several other ways that elections can be rigged.

      Democracy please

All of the membership forms were submitted with personal cheques and credit cards of members. Why were the memberships even challenged in the first place, cause a bunch of sore losers were unhappy? The kid won the race fair and square. It just appears he is being shafted for peoples general dislike of his parents who have poor records as MPs. Not sure what this young man has to offer but why go after him because his mom doesn't seem to have anything to say and his dad was a stain on the Conservative party. The people of Fleetwood-Port Kells should be asking themselves why they keep voting in an incompetent woman instead of taking it out on her son who seems to have earned his nomination and is educated.
