The Georgia Straight proudly sponsors the 10th annual Downtown Eastside Heart of the City Festival

      Vancouver Moving Theatre in association with Carnegie Community Centre and the Association of United Ukrainian Canadians present the 10th annual Downtown Eastside Heart of the City Festival. The 10-day event runs October 23 to November 3, with special anniversary events continuing post-festival on November 8 to 10.

      This year, more than 80 events will take place at over 25 locations across the Downtown Eastside along the theme of “Drawing Strength from Our Roots”. Events include music, stories, songs, poetry, cultural celebrations, films, theatre, dance, processions, spoken word, workshops, discussions, gallery exhibits, mixed media, art talks, history talks, walking tours, and artist showcases.

      Highlights of the festival include the DTES-based Uzume Taiko; urban ink productions’ tribute to women in the fishing industry, Women In Fish; the Only Animal and PHS Community Services-produced multimedia performance, Out on a Limb; Sansho Daiko’s tribute to taiko drumming, Taiko Roots in the Heart of the City!; the Oppenheimer Park Art Show: Fun & Games; Thursdays Writing Collective’s The Stanza Project, Hot Jazz at Carnegie featuring the Carnegie Jazz Band; the Iskwew Singers; Barrio Flamenco: Flamenco for the People; and the premiere of Bread and Salt.
