Transcript: James Moore says it's not his job to feed his neighbour's kid

    1 of 1 2 of 1

News 1130 has posted the audiotape on its website of Industry Minister James Moore's controversial comments about the federal government's role in addressing child hunger.

Moore has claimed that his comment that it wasn't his job to feed his neighbour's kid was taken out of context.

It came after he said that the Conservative government "wasn't going to usurp the province's jurisdiction" over addressing child poverty.

Here's the remainder of his remarks:

"How one certainly scales and define poverty is not quite an apples to apples comparison all across the country. There's no question that prosperity is up, unemployment is down. Unemployment is down in every region of this country if you look over the past few years; it's slightly up if you look at where it was two and three years ago.

More Canadians are working now than ever before. A million net new jobs have been created across this country, and through economic growth, obviously you create more prosperity, more opportunity for everybody.

We've never been wealthier as a country than we are right now. Never been wealthier.

Well, obviously nobody wants kids to go to school hungry. But yeah, certainly we want to make sure that kids go to school full-bellied. But is that always the government's job to be there to serve people their breakfast? Empowering families with more power and resources so that they can feed their own children is, I think, a good thing.

...Is it my job to feed my neighbour's child? I don't think so."

What I really find shocking and disappointing is the surprising no. Of right wing voters who think much the same way! Am I wrong?

i made sure i listened to the interview before reading comments. didn't sound like anything was taken out of context to me. arrogant, obnoxious, out of touch, the usual blah blah blah scripted messaging. i hang with people that look after their neighbours, their kids and their property. people that have formed a support network that exceeds boundaries and borders. people that reach out to those that need it the most, often in their situations that are a direct result of cutbacks and a lack of government funding (Federal AND Provincial) where it hurts folks (read families) the most. James Moore should step down, resign along with his disgusting attitude.

It's funny how these Fundamentalist Christian Right Wingers conveniently forget parts of their own Bible.

For if you give, you will get! Your gift will return to you in full and overflowing measure, pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, and running over. Whatever measure you use to give -- large or small -- will be used to measure what is given back to you." (TLB, Luke 6:38)

Oh there's that little bit about Jesus feeding the Poor etc etc.

But hey if your a Neo-CON-servative than you just ignore your own Religious Text.

Instead your believe in rigid Corporate Welfare Ideology.

Makes sense, why have both federal and provincial programs?
Twice the administration costs, twice the work to apply for them.
Good to see someone making sense.

Looking at him I doubt that there would be any food left to feed the neighbors children. Whats that saying about pigs politicians and troughs...

Wow, the leftist sheeple are having a field day with this one! I'm guessing less than 10% of them actually read the context of this quote, but let's not miss an opportunity to jump all over this white, fat, conservative pig!!! Clearly, he must be evil and wrong!!!

What he's actually saying, of course, is that it's better to teach someone to fish and give them the resources to fish with... than to be handing out fish for the rest of their lives.

Oh, but wait... what am I thinking... that's exactly what the left would want in the first place. Maybe y'all did read the article after all. Sorry, my bad.

Whoa, when did this become about his religion? I see nothing in this story or on the internet about his religion, but a whole lot about his business background. There are lots of Christians who feed the hungry. And seek to do the same through policy work. See the leader of our Green Party. Even if he is a Christian, that doesn't mean you get to paint all Christians the same. Particularly when so many explicitly state it is our duty to care for the poor.
