In 2013, the Vancouver Canucks attracted plenty of attention on Twitter when the player of the game started wearing a hand-woven painted wicker hat.

It was a gift to the team by people living in Haida Gwaii and was seen on TV across the country in postgame interviews.

On more than one occasion, goalie Eddie Lack wore the Haida hat.

But nowadays, the former Canucks fan favourite is wearing a fireman's helmet when he's deemed the game's most valuable player.

That's because this is how the Carolina Hurricanes promote heroic play.

Lack donned the helmet for the first time today after posting his first win in a 'Canes jersey over the New York Islanders.
