Rare Clash footage surfaces, still the only band that matters

    1 of 3 2 of 3

Here’s never-before-seen footage of the Clash performing “Safe European Home” at Detroit's Motor City Roller Rink in 1980, posted on YouTube this morning courtesy of PeaceJam's "One Billion Acts of Peace" Campaign.

Ivan Suvanjieff shot the clip on super 8 film (arguably the only gauge that matters). Suvanjieff used to be known as Mark J. Norton back when he was an associate editor at Creem magazine, and he promises to release more footage if that YouTube counter spins past 100K.

      Peace, but not quiet!

when I saw the "only band that matters" part I was madly looking around for the Thin Lizzy story. Where'd it get to?

What can you say? Fantastic footage of the mighty, mighty Clash in full throttle. This song, by the way, was the opening song at the PNE Forum show during this same tour. Joe and company blew the place flat and knocked the dinkish D.O.A. fans on their collective asses...it was an awesome sight to behold!

Newt, Newt, Newt! Never tempt thunderbolts...even Phil Lynott knew that.

Privileged to have seen Joe four times in my life - once on the Cut the Crap tour, once with the Pogues, and twice in Tokyo with the Mescaleros! (Great clip, btw).

      A. MacInnis, thanks for reminding me that I'm still kicking myself for missing the Pogue's tour with Joe -- what was I thinking?!

It was a pretty special show, though the highlight for me was when some cute girl riding someone's shoulders flashed her tits at the stage, and Shane responded with raised eyebrows. (He also shared a whiskey bottle with the audience, as I recall!).

The Clash at Kerrisdale Arena with Bang Bang - featuring the late great Jim Bescott - was a smoking show. So was the Pogues show at the Commodore with Joe on vocals - when they played London Calling - it blew the crowd away at an already great show. The Cut the Crap show at the Coliseum - not so much. Sadly missing Mick Jones, Topper - it was like a Clash tribute show - no wonder that disc isn't in the new Clash box set.
