We all knew the Force was going to be strong with this one. But we now know how strong it actually is.

The launch of the new Star Wars sequel trilogy surpassed Disney's projections in Canada and hauled in $18.6 million at the Canadian box office.

Needless to say, Star Wars: The Force Awakens smashed numerous Canadian box office records.

It was the biggest opening weekend of all time in Canada, surpassing The Avengers ($15.6 million) and The Avengers: The Age of Ultron ($13.8 million). In Quebec, the blockbuster surged past the previous opening weekend record-holder, The Da Vinci Code at $3.14 million, with $3.27 million.

As if that's not enough, the film became the biggest Friday and single-day gross in Canada with $8 million.
