Releasing this week are Fire Emblem Fates and Street Fighter V. Also, Rocket League comes to Xbox One for the first time. And sign up for your chance to get in on the exclusive closed beta for Mirror’s Edge Catalyst.

Story a big part of Street Fighter V

The Street Fighter video games are mostly button-mashing beat-ups, pitting player against player in a brawl for the title.

Street Fighter V, coming to PS4 and Windows on February 16, has a bit more story to it.

In fairness, there’s always been a narrative behind the franchise, told through other media more than the games themselves. But Capcom is committed to making it a bigger part of this next game.

Gamers can play through the personal stories of each of the characters to learn how the fighters are connected and what they’re all about.

And in June, a free update to Street Fighter V will be released that is being described as a “cinematic expansion” and that tells the story of events that take place between Street Fighter III and Street Fighter IV.

Faith is a “runner” in Mirror’s Edge Catalyst.

Beta for Mirror’s Edge Catalyst will be closed

EA’s prequel/reboot of the Mirror’s Edge franchise is only a few months away, and to fine tune the futuristic adventure, developer DICE is staging a beta test.

And it’s going to be exclusive.

Sign up here for your chance to be one of the lucky ones chosen to step into the shoes of the runner, Faith, before anyone else.

Mirror’s Edge is coming to PS4, Windows, and Xbox One on May 24.

In Fire Emblem Fates, the player begins by customizing the main character.

Create your own character for Fire Emblem Fates

Role-playing video-game franchise Fire Emblem gets a new story this week in the form of Fates, for the Nintendo 2/3DS, in which you customize your own avatar including choosing gender, appearance, and name.

There are three versions of the game. The first two, which will cost $50 and release on February 19, each tell the story from the other side of the narrative. In Birthright, you go up against a corrupt monarch. In Conquest, you work to correct the monarchy from within.

If you own one of the versions you’ll be able to download the other for $25.

Another $25 gets you the third version, Revelation, which puts you in between the two factions. Revelation will be released on March 10.

A special edition of the game, priced at $100, includes all three versions on a game card, an artbook, and a 3DS XL case.

There’s also a 3DS XL system decorated with art inspired by the game being sold for $240.

Soccer and race cars combine to create the very popular Rocket League.

Rocket League coming to Xbox One

The sleeper hit Rocket League, which mashes up soccer and race cars, finds its way to the Xbox One system this week, on February 17.

The game has become very popular online, as players go bumper to bumper, piloting vehicles around a pitch, alternately trying to crash into other players and score goals.

Rocket League is already available on PS4 and Windows, and because it is playable across platforms, Xbox One owners can now get in on the mayhem. It will be priced at US$20.
