Movie director Uwe Boll opening Gastown restaurant Bauhaus

    1 of 1 2 of 1

Nearly a year ago, Straight staffer and resident horror aficionado Steve Newton reported that “the world’s most reviled film director” Uwe Boll was trying to make a name for himself as a food critic.

Now, it appears that Vancouver-based Boll is taking his interest in food one step further and preparing to open a restaurant in Gastown.

A few days ago, an executive chef position for an upcoming restaurant called Bauhaus was posted on job-search website Indeed.

“Bauhas [sic] Restaurant will be Vancouver's most innovative and exquisite new modern restaurant devoted to the prestige and etiquette of the finest European traditions,” the listing reads. “Located in Gastown, one of Vancouver's finest restaurant districts, Bauhas is seeking an exceptional Executive Chef with world class experience to fill a permanent full-time position.”

At the bottom of the job posting, the instructions say to “please send resumes by mail to the attention of Uwe Boll, executive director”.

The mailing address is 1 West Cordova Street. Yes, that’s the same building that formerly housed Mark Brand’s Boneta, No. 1 Noodle House, and Save On Meats pop-up restaurant.

According to the Bauhaus Restaurant website, Boll’s newest project will launch February 2015. Here’s hoping that his skills as a restaurant owner don’t stink as much as his movies.

Vancouver needs more pretentious food establishments. (It needs more pretentious everything.)

If this character's restaurant is anything like his movies, St. Pauls had better buy another stomach pump.

Nice, a picture of Mr Boll giving the camera the "finger" very professional picture of himself and he wants open a business? Hmm one would think that a picture like this would send off the wrong impression of Mr Boll as someone who is rather anti-social. Good One. Always best to be careful about taking pictures in public because you never know where life takes you.

Probably yet another meat-obsessed joint. It's a pretty one-dimensional neighbourhood, gastronomically speaking.

Okay, guys, you need to update. I cannot speak for his cuisine, but Mr. Boll has made a series of very interesting, reasonably well-crafted, and idea rich films in recent years. Most are violent exploitation (Rampage, Assault on Wall Street) but not all (his Darfur movie). All are quite competent, if definitely unsubtle, and are filled with a rather nasty, subversive political awareness. (Stoic is apparently quite good too but I haven't gotten to it yet). Rampage, the best of his recent works by most counts, has a terrific performance by Brendan Fletcher - who played the mentally challenged guy in Gilliam's Tideland, and also was the star of a Vancouver stage production of Equus a few years ago - and a small role for Katherine Isabelle, so BC film buffs should definitely check it out. Boll's apparently just completed a sequel to it, too...

Hummm....for being a writer for a respected publication such as the Straight, I am surprised by your ignorance. First off, I would be very surprised if you have watched more then one, if any of Uwe Boll's films? It seems as though you googled him to get your information based on a few films that he directed years ago and not facts based on his recent films that are very intelligently written and have had great response from the audiences. With all of the boring food in Vancouver I am excited to see what this restaurant will bring. Maybe a real journalist would contact him and find out the details instead of assume?? just a thought......

      wish uwe well

he's been involved in dozens of movies (yes, many of them terrible), but what does that have to do with anything? i hope he finds a great exec chef and succeeds in that space, which is so large you'd think only a cactus club type restaurant could succeed there and that would be about as awesome as a chain restaurant on the beach.. as gastown becomes increasingly gobbled up by fewer large players and a desirable destination for flagships of all varieties, with m brand having downsized due to apparent financial woes leaving locations up for grabs, I'll be among the first to check this independently operated joint run by an obvious food-lover out. hopefully i'm not alone in the dark.

The last comment at 1:35 am stating that "Gastown has become increasingly gobbled up by fewer large players and desirable destination fro flagships of all varieties" is this person aware they are talking about Gastown. This is not Yaletown, Gastown doesn't have Cactus Club, Earls, Joeys, Milestones, The Keg. The only Franchise down there is Vera's burger shack. The whole area is made up of smaller rooms and owners that roll their sleeves up and get dirty. As apposed to there parts of the city where the rooms are so big the owners can sit back in their Ivory towers and count the cash. A little confused by this comment
