Activist Malala Yousafzai becomes youngest winner of the Nobel Peace Prize

Seventeen-year-old Malala Yousafzai has become the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize.

The Pakistani author and activist first came to prominance after anonymously chronicling her educational struggles in a blog for the BBC.

After appearing in a documentary about how her school was closed by the Taliban, Yousafzai was shot in the head by a Taliban fighter in October 2009. She survived her injury and has continued to advocate for women's education rights. In 2013, Yousafzai published her autobiography, I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban.

Yousafzai shares this year's honour with 60-year-old Kailash Satyarthi, an Indian children's rights activist, "for their struggle against the suppression of children and young people and for the right of all children to education".
