Green Leader Elizabeth May submits petition on behalf of 9/11 truthers

The leader of the Green Party of Canada has presented in the House of Commons a petition calling on the Canadian government to undertake a review of the September 11, 2001, attacks in the United States.

That doesn't mean that Elizabeth May, the MP for Saanich-Gulf Islands, is a 9/11 truther, however.

Indeed, the Green party made sure to send out the following statement:

Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada and Member of Parliament for Saanich – Gulf Islands, submitted a petition on December 3, 2014. The Green Party of Canada issues the following statement to clearly state its policy regarding Green Members presenting petitions before the House of Commons.

Ms. May received a petition signed by Canadian citizens, who requested that she present to the House their request that the Government of Canada conduct a parliamentary review into the events that occurred in the United States on September 11, 2001. As ordinary citizens are not permitted to address the House directly, it is the duty of all parliamentarians to act as a voice for all Canadians, including those they disagree with.

Ms. May has clearly stated that she does not agree with the contents of this petition. However, she supports the right of all Canadians to have their voices heard in Parliament. The Green Party echoes Ms. May's sentiments that it does not agree with the petition, but believes that no citizen should be denied the right to make their voice heard in Parliament.

House of Commons Procedure and Practice notes the inability of citizens to address the House themselves, and their need for a representative to voice concerns on their behalf. Page 1170-1171 also states: “The Member, whose role it is to make the presentation on behalf of the petitioners, is not required to be in agreement with the content of any petition he or she may choose to present, and no such inference is to be drawn.”

So don't expect to get into a fruitful discussion on Twitter with May about the fall of 7 World Trade Center.

No matter how ill-informed or downright stupid the petitioners may be they have the right to gum up an already ineffectual parliament with absurd petitions based on flawed information and paranoid delusions.

If the government of Canada wastes even 5 minutes on this I will be very disappointed.

I will be very disappointed if this ISN'T entertained. I'm tired of an uniformed, arrogant majority and the media telling the rest of us what we should think. Whether I am a 9/11 truther or not isn't the issue, unless we're name-calling. What is at issue here is free speech and democracy. If we are going to suppress ideas, however ridiculous they may seem to some, we can't call ourselves a free society. We are a dictatorship of the majority who are given all the "answers" by the media and never reveal how they arrived at that conclusion, save for people who support their narrative. I don't care whether 9/11 was an inside job or not. I just want the truth. If Ms.May has the courage to try to seek it, I applaud her, even if she's proven crazy on this issue. I'd rather be a conspiracy theorist than a braindead moron who doesn't ask questions and accepts the status quo. Bravo to Liz for daring to exercise her rights as a Canadian!

The problem with the "truth" movement is that they're anything but open-minded. Anyone with a differing opinion is labelled a "troll" or a "shill". Unless you present them with evidence that fully agrees with their theories, they will never listen to you. Anyone that disagrees is automatically disregarded as working for "them" as a "disinfo agent". Any media coverage opposing them is dismissed as controlled Mainstream media putting out the info that "they" want you to believe and thereby "they" can keep you brainwashed and under "their" control.
So, any open discussion with a "truther" is all but impossible.

Happened in Sept didn't it? The main thing here is that Elizabeth May, when approached by MANY constituents, believed it was her duty to bring this up in parliament, regardless of her opinion because she is there to represent her riding. Simple, Good on you Elizabeth!

Huge waste of time, even if it is supposed to be "symbolic" of how much the Greens would "listen" to us. I'd rather politicians ignore the crazies rather than spend every day submitting every Change.org petition signed by 2 or more Canadians.

      @Itsame
Sounds like a petition to me.

You're joking right? Suppressing ideas? Have you heard of this rad new thing called the Internet, where people are free to state their opinions regardless of how insane they are? Clearly you are a relic and one of those 9/11 nutjobs.

An issue I have with the 9/11 "Truth" movement is how historical facts are sensationalized to appear as conspiracies. The claim often repeated by them to engage potential supporters is "Did you know a THIRD tower fell on 9/11? as if it's a secret being hidden from the public.

If anyone cares to break out a search engine, it's a known fact that 7 World Trade Center, a 47-storey building adjacent to the Twin Towers, collapsed about seven hours after Tower 1 and 2 as the result of burning debris from the larger buildings.

The collapse of 7 World Trade Center was reported on CNN and other media outlets as it happened, but it did not register with the public's attention given the catastrophic magnitude of earlier events, plus the fact that 7 WTC had been evacuated already.

Claiming the collapse of 7 WTC as some kind of secret conspiracy amounts to a disturbing exhibit of intellectual dishonesty which has no business being tabled in Canada's parliament.

At least she is no longer defending Jian Ghomeshi on the basis of his Facebook posts and telling us how much she "loves" the guy

Compared against that, this is an improvement, however modest
