Help share Vancouver queer history at Wikipedia edit-a-thon

Efforts to preserve queer history is often complicated by the fact that much of it was censored, destroyed, distorted, hidden, ignored, forgotten, or just simply not told.

But here's a nifty way to help educate others about Vancouver's queer histories (and herstories) and learn online editing skills at the same time—and it's all free.

Simon Fraser University is holding a Vancouver queer history Wikipedia edit-a-thon on Monday (January 12) at their Burnaby campus (Bennett Library, Research Commons, seminar room 7010).

For those who haven't edited Wikipedia before, there's a workshop (not required but highly recommended) on how to do so in the morning (10 a.m. to 12 noon).

Lunch will be provided from 12 to 1 p.m., with the editing marathon running from 12 to 3 p.m.

Participants should bring information and stories about local queer history (and any relevant documentation), such as activism, politics, and cultural activities, as well as their own laptop.

A great idea ... but on three days notice? What were they thinking? Did they even think to invite any of the folks who actually lived through and contributed to gay Vancouver's history through the 60s, 70s and 80s and give them sufficient time to work this into their schedules? I'm asking around and so far this is the first anyone has heard of this. While the Straight posted this news as quickly as they could, I note that the original posting only appeared on the SFU website this Monday. To add to picture of bureaucratic blindness, the woman whose name and phone number are listed on the SFU site for further information is "away" until April. I hope to be proven wrong, but this sounds to me like another academic wank-fest. Just sign me "Cranky Old Queen", but I think this is insulting.
