Longtime independent Vancouver grocer Stong's Market reopens at new Dunbar location
Just in time for Christmas, a longtime neighbourhood favourite has returned to its homebase in Dunbar.
Stong's, established in 1931 with one of Vancouver's first open-air markets, launched its first storefront in 1955, and even expanded to a five-store chain in the 1960s.
The Dunbar store relocated twice before settling upon a location at 4560 Dunbar Street, which opened in 1980.
As the site was slated for redevelopment, the store was closed on May 10.
Stong's Market and Deli moved a few blocks from Dunbar and 29th Avenue to set up shop at Dunbar at 26th Avenue in a new mixed-use building that houses 50 condos.
The new and improved Stong's has grown from 14,000-square-feet to a 20,000-square-foot space at 4221 Dunbar Street, which opened on December 3.
The new location features much of what was available in the previous location in addition to new offerings: woodstone-oven pizzas, custom bouquets, a bakery, and a café.
There's also a free underground parkade.
Stong's also opened a 20,000-square-foot location on May 28 in North Vancouver at 2150 Dollarton Highway. The North Vancouver location includes a dry-aged B.C. beef case, an artisan bakery, fresh produce, a pizza oven, a café, and more.
It was the first time in over 20 years the company had opened another location.
