U.S. President Donald Trump has struck a blow against the progress of American transgender rights.

Today (February 22), the Trump administration reversed federal guidelines that permitted transgender students to use washrooms according to their gender identity in public schools.

In May 2016, the Obama administration informed school districts and colleges that federal legislation that bans sex discrimination in schools includes gender identity.

However, the Trump administration has argued that there is no legal foundation for this interpretation.

White House spokesperson Sean Spicer said that President Trump believes policies regarding transgender people using washrooms should be decided at the state level.
