E3 2017: Lots of Nintendo games coming for the Switch, including Super Mario Odyssey

What a difference a year makes. Or a couple of years.

Nintendo's Switch game console, with its unique controls and portability, is a success. And now that the company—and its fans—have had that sigh of relief, we can all turn our attention to the games that we'll be playing on Switch.

In the Nintendo Spotlight that broadcast today, Tuesday morning (June 13), although Nintendo revealed that Metroid Prime 4 is in development for the Switch, as are new Kirby and Yoshi games, most of the games featured are coming this year.

Among them are Pokkén Tournament DX, a Switch edition of the game in which players battle against each other, each with one of the two Joycon controllers, and FIFA 18, both of which arrive in September.

Also coming this fall is Fire Emblem: Warriors, which will be available in editions for Nintendo's 3DS and 2DS handheld systems.

Before that, though, is the interesting mashup Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle, developed in secret by Ubisoft and coming on August 29.

Rocket League, the surprise hit that mashes up car racing and soccer, will be released for the Switch this holiday season. It will have cross-play support so gamers on other platforms can all play together, as well as Nintendo items for vehicle customization.

This holiday will also see the release of Xenoblade Chronicles 2.

But the Switch game that everyone is waiting for is Super Mario Odyssey, which will be available on October 27. The "Odyssey" from the title is actually a ship that Mario uses to travel the world, and in the various places he visits, the environments are completely open to exploration.

New mechanics will encourage experimentation, too. Mario can "capture" things with his red cap, which lets him possess not just characters, including enemies, but also objects. Mario can possess a sign, for example, and then fling himself out of it. He can possess an electrical wire to travel along it to other areas.

And for the first time ever, coins are actually currency in the game and can be used to buy souvenirs from the different places Mario visits, which are sometimes necessary to access hidden areas.

Nintendo also confirmed the second expansion to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The Champions Ballad will be released this holiday, following Trials of the Sword, which will be released on June 30. The two packs are only available as part of the Expansion Pass, which is priced at $28.
