The Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced today (July 21) that the club had acquired both a prized international roster spot and a new goalkeeper.

The roster spot, through December 31, 2017, came courtesy of the Montreal Impact at a cost of $50,000 of the club's general allocation money.

The acquisition gives the 'Caps nine international spots through the current season, all of which are now filled due to the team's other Friday announcement.

The 'keeper, New Zealand international Stefan Marinovic, has been signed through the 2018 season, with options for two subsequent years.

Marinovic comes from Germany's third-tier 3.Liga (formerly the Regionalliga), where he has spent his eight-year professional career so far with four teams, most recently Bavaria's SpVgg Unterhaching.

The 6-3, 25-year-old Marinovic joins a roster that features Danish backstopper David Ousted as its go-to 'keeper. Ousted, 32, who joined the Whitecaps midway through the 2013 season, is in the final year of his contract.

Also on the 'Caps' roster is 25-year-old goalkeeper Spencer Richey; the Seattle native has been with the first team since December 2016.
